Purple Power

Story

*Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to my charity of choice which is Epilepsy Queensland Inc.*

Hi, my name is Renée Williams; I’m 19 and I’m trying to make a difference in the world by raising both money for Epilepsy Queensland and awareness for Epilepsy. While fundraising in person, on this platform alone in 2017 I raised $349 of my $500 goal. In 2018 I raised the target by another $500 and raised $82.36. In 2019 I will raise the target by $300 and hope people are kind enough to help me reach that target.

In 2018 I'm aimed to raise at least $500 in order to climb the Story Bridge for Epilepsy Queensland while it is lit up purple in honour of Purple Day on the night of March 26th with all money raised going directly to Epilepsy Queensland.

If you’d like to know a little more about my personal experience with Epilepsy; I was diagnosed with Epilepsy in 2011 when I began having frequent Seizures. I’ve struggled with my diagnosis due to common fears that people with Epilepsy tend to have caused by the stigma, discrimination and misconceptions that still surround the condition, I felt very alone and that I couldn’t talk to anybody about it. I’ve since learnt that I’m not alone and I’ve probably met many people with Epilepsy, due to how common the condition is, without even realising, due to so many people keeping their condition a secret out of fear. I don’t want others to feel so alone and scared and the only way to stop that is to break the cycle and bring Epilepsy out of the shadows by speaking out and shining a light on Epilepsy despite all the fears and negativity around it.

Please donate to help Epilepsy Queensland spread knowledge and support.

I also ask that you please sign the Purple Pledge online for free at; http://www.epilepsyqueensland.com.au/purple-pledge-form

Since starting my journey to break that cycle of fear and stigma I have become the current record holder for collecting the most signatures on the Purple Pledge by setting the record with 342 signatures in 2017 which I beat in 2018 with 454 signatures and I have had the honour of being awarded the Role Model award by Epilepsy Queensland.

Whether you donate $1 or $60, you sign the pledge or you wear purple on March 26th I thank you for your support, any support is deeply appreciated by me and many other people who have epilepsy or who’s loved ones have Epilepsy.

If you'd like to know more about me, my experiences as somebody with epilepsy or find ways to contact me you can find all of that and more on my blog at; https://purpleadventuresblog.wordpress.com/

**The "money raised" section at the top of the page includes all money I raised in 2017, 2018 and this year which is why the target is set as $1149.00I hope this saves confusion about why the target is set so high and how close I am to my goal. :-)**

Epilepsy Queensland Inc

For more than 50 years, Epilepsy Queensland has been assisting Queensland families touched by epilepsy. Services include education, counselling, information services, children’s and family support programs, specialised training programs, support groups and advocacy. Epilepsy directly affects around 2% (1 in 50) of the population and still remains one of the most misunderstood conditions in today’s society. 28,740 children and adults in Queensland with active epilepsy which is more than muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, and several others combined. Anyone can be diagnosed at any age and Epilepsy Queensland helps to replace the fear and uncertainty with knowledge and empowerment. 60 people per week receive an epilepsy diagnosis. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is doubtful there is any other medical condition so universally neglected due to a combination of social stigma, low profile and lack of resources. WHO recognises epilepsy as the world’s most common serious brain disorder. Please help us to be the beacon of hope for people living with, and impacted by epilepsy in Queensland.
